It’s the time of the year when everyone is starting to get into the holiday spirit and thinking about social plans, gifts and seasonal cheer. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the crazy planning and dashing from one function to another, but it’s a also a great time to slow down and think about the community around you.
November 28th, is Giving Tuesday. Have you heard of this day before? If you haven’t, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It used to be a blip on the radar and has been growing each year in it’s following and recognition through word of mouth and social media. Giving Tuesday was established six years ago by the 92nd Street Y and United Nations Foundation as an alternative answer to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. To learn more about the day and how it got started, visit www.givingtuesday.org and give to the organization of your choice.
Maybe it’s time or talent you’d like to donate this season, but aren’t sure where to begin? There are several organizations that want to help you get plugged in within your community, including www.volunteermatch.org. They make it simple. Plug in your location and their search tool populates multiple volunteer opportunities in your area.
There are also seasonal specific giving opportunities operating this time of year in most communities, including the Salvation Army, Angel Tree, Red Cross and many more. Local soup kitchens will be serving holiday meals all over the nation and volunteers are needed to hand out seasonal necessities, prepare and serve food and entertain guests.
It’s the season to give. Step out and find your giving path!
